Reflection: On Home Blessings On this Feast of the Epiphany, the day when Jesus revealed himself to the non-Jewish world in the persons of the Three Kings (wise men, magi), it is customary to bless the homes of the faithful. It is simple to do. A prayer of blessing is said by the head of the family; incense may be burned. Then, using chalk, a cross, the initials of the three wise men and the year are written over the front door or main entrance. For this year it would read: +BCM 2008. The blessing prayer can be as simple as "Lord, bless this home and those who live here". Or, the prayer of blessing the Church uses: Blessed are you God our Father, for the gift of this house as the dwelling place of this family. Grant that those who live here may obtain the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through our works of charity let us show what grace your blessing brings, so that all who visit this home will find the spirit of love and peace which only you can give. On the table in front of the ambo (pulpit) are some envelopes with a little bit of incense and some chalk. Take one. Bless your home.// It is also the traditional time for gift giving. You can close the Christmas season with one more gift to someone in memory of the gold, frankincense and myrrh given to Jesus. May the peace of Christ be in your homes and upon all who visit you during this holy year.

Stewardship: Today we remember the three wise men from the East who came to play homage to the infant Jesus, bringing him rich gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The gifts we bring – our time, service and some share of what we earn for the work we do – are equally precious in his sight.

Parish workers are reminded to sign the RSVP lists in the sacristy for the annual party on Jan. 20th.

Family Perspective.: In today's gospel Herod "was greatly troubled" because he expected the worst. Bad things happen when we allow anxiety and fear to control our relationships. In 2008 expect the best from others, and you will be pleasantly surprised.
